COMMISSIONS
Kala collaborates closely with clients to create pieces that are entirely site-specific, born from the architecture, light, and spirit of a space.
Ceramic art should never be limited by the size of the kiln. By utilizing sophisticated modular systems and a multi-media approach, I transform a traditionally intimate medium into something truly monumental. Whether a project calls for a singular focal point or an expansive, site-specific installation, my work is designed to scale fluidly to meet the architectural demands and user interface of any space.
I specialize in the technical bridge between art and structure. With extensive experience designing custom installation hardware, specialized cleats, and mounting systems, I ensure that even the most ambitious concepts are structurally sound and seamlessly integrated. For large-scale installations, I collaborate with a licensed contractor to navigate complex engineering requirements and on-site assembly.
From initial concept to final install, we can push the physical limits of clay to create rare and high-impact artworks.

How to Work Together
1
Discovery Meeting
We begin with a conversation either by phone, Zoom, or in person at the Sonoma studio. I want to understand your space, your aesthetic, your goals, and the story you want the work to tell.
2
Proposal & Concept
I develop a proposal outlining concept, materials, scale, timeline, and budget. Sketches and mock-ups give a sense of direction, with ceramic samples providing a richness that renderings can only approximate.
3
Fabrication
Every tile and object is hand-formed and individually glazed in the Sonoma studio. Each piece passes through multiple firings, with clay bodies and glazes tailored to your project.
4
Installation
Shipping and installation are handled with the same care as the making. For large-scale architectural works, structural considerations and hanging solutions are addressed throughout design and fabrication.

Methodology
Concept + craft,
made by hand
Kala’s work is grounded in material integrity, site-specificity, and honest craft. With over two decades of experience, her work balances material rigor with visual impact and story telling.
Hand-Formed, One by One
Every tile and object is hand-formed individually and each piece is handled at least a dozen times. From wet clay through multiple firings, finishing, and installation. my work is comparable to painting on a canvas, where I'm also making the canvas.
Custom Glaze and RECYCLED Content
I combine research, personal experience, and extensive material testing to develop clay combinations and glazes tailored to each project. Glaze chemistry is affected by the firing process, the clay-glaze interface, and source materials. Project-specific testing is always part of the process with recycled and foraged content at the center of the testing.
Why Ceramics?
Ceramic is color-fast, archival, durable, and easy to maintain — an ideal material for permanent, site-specific work. It is expressive and adaptable, capable of nearly anything. I bring in other materials like metal, wood, and plaster when the work calls for it.
Structural & Architectural Coordination
For large-scale and architectural works, structural considerations are addressed at every stage of design and fabrication. We have a licensed contractor on the team who advises on engineering and, in more complex scenarios, handles the install.
