AEGINA, GREECE — This summer, the historic facade of the Titina Cinema will be transformed into a living monument of gratitude and exchange. Titled "RECIPROCITY: A Gesture of Exchange," the project is an experimental, collaborative ceramic installation designed to bridge the gap between visiting artists and the local community.

Led by American artist and creative director Kala Stein, the project features monumental, suspended mobile structures resembling fruiting branches or clusters of grapes. From these branches, multiples of unique, handmade ceramic objects including mugs, ornaments, and sculptural pieces will hang, creating an inviting public display.

A New Model of "Regenerative Tourism"

Rooted in the spirit of hospitality (philoxenia), RECIPROCITY explores the concept of "regenerative tourism," a movement emphasizing meaningful, reciprocal engagement with host destinations.

"As traveling artists, we wanted to express our gratitude to the community that hosts us," says Stein. "By transforming ceramic objects into shared gifts, we are exploring how art can catalyze connection and dissolve barriers during a time of global conflict".

The "Harvest": Turning Art into Exchange

The installation is designed to be interactive and ephemeral. Community members are encouraged to engage directly with the sculpture by selecting and "harvesting" an individual piece to keep. As pieces are untied, the artwork evolves from a collaborative installation into hundreds of individual gifts, completing the act of exchange.

Community Collaboration

The project brings together twelve American ceramic artists participating in the Clay and Culture in Greece Workshop hosted by The Cool Projects (Marina Coriolano-Iykourezos, Greece) and organized by Meraki Travel experiences (Catherine Keenan, USA), taught by artist Kala Stein (USA). In an effort to foster a true local dialogue, Aegina’s local potters are also invited to contribute their own small works to the hanging sculptures.

Event Schedule

  • Opening: May 30, 2026

  • Public Reception: June 3, 2026

  • Harvesting Period: June 1–June 5 (or until all pieces are harvested)

RECIPROCITY is produced in partnership with The Cool Projects, Meraki Travel Experiences, and Titina Cinema. The installation coincides with the Art Shelter Vol. 3 festival, inviting a broad audience to experience this unique social experiment.
