Mandala

Designed as a centerpiece for the hospital’s meditation room, impressions of delicate flora are cast into architectural plaster to form a 21-part mandala.

  • Commissioned for Enloe Health Regional Cancer Center, Chico, CA by Grigio Art Consulting. The concept honors the local ecology and natural history cast into a traditional form of the mandala- a spiritual symbol representing the universe, serving as meditative tools to guide the viewer toward a sense of inner peace and cosmic order.

  • The production of the Mandala begins with foraging botanicals. Each specimen is pressed into a porcelain slab to achieve depth and detailed relief texture of the petals and leaves. Custom colors are made in house by weighing and mixing specific ratios of cementitious pigments that are hand painted onto the clay, then backfilled with white plaster. Laser cut acrylic molds were designed to provide a modular mold system for making geometric forms that fit together perfectly to make the mandala. The complex process combines techniques borrowed from printmaking, casting, mold making, tile making, and bas relief.

    • 70" x 40" x 1” (177.8 cm x 101.60 cm x 2.5 cm)
